Assam Meghalaya Tour Kochi to the Abode of Clouds

Kamakhya's darshan, a jeep among Kaziranga's rhinos, Shillong's lakes and Cherrapunjee's waterfall cliffs, and the crystal Umngot at Dawki — six days across the north east.

Return flights, five nights on twin sharing, Kaziranga entry and the jungle jeep safari, and veg and non-veg meals — with a Fortune tour manager on the group.

About This Trip

The Journey in One Look.

A living root bridge, Meghalaya

The route covers 1 night in Guwahati, 1 in Kaziranga and 3 in Shillong, on twin sharing, with Kaziranga National Park entry and the jungle jeep safari included. Veg and non-veg meals run as per the itinerary, with one litre of drinking water per person per day, and meet and greet service at the airports, with transfers in non-AC vehicles, the hill-country standard. Itinerary

Day by Day

Kamakhya darshan, into Kaziranga for the jeep safari, the climb to Shillong, and Cherrapunjee, Mawlynnong and Dawki.

Day01
Kamakhya Temple, Guwahati

Meet and greet on arrival at Guwahati Airport, then straight to the day's heart: darshan at the Kamakhya Temple, one of the primary shrines among the 51 Shakti Peethas of the Sati tradition and among the most important Shakta temples anywhere. Check in after the darshan.

Overnight in Guwahati. Meals: dinner.

Day02

After breakfast, the road runs east to Kaziranga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for the Great Indian One-Horned Rhinoceros, its landscape a weave of dense forest, tall elephant grass, reeds, marshes and shallow pools shared by tigers, elephants, wild water buffalo and swamp deer. The day takes in the outer view of the tea gardens, Rhino View Point and Orchid Park, and closes with Assam's cultural dances — the tea garden Jhumur, the proud Bihu and the Karbi bamboo dance.

Overnight at Kaziranga. Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner.

Day03

The morning belongs to the jungle jeep safari through the park's Central Range at Kohora or the Western Zone, grass gold in the early light and the big animals out. Back for a freshen-up, then the long climb to Shillong, the Scotland of the East, pausing at Umiam Lake, the largest artificial lake in Meghalaya, with the Cathedral of Mary as time permits on arrival.

Overnight in Shillong. Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner.

Day04

After breakfast, the road runs to Cherrapunjee, also called Sohra, long credited as the wettest place on earth; nearby Mawsynram currently holds that title, but Sohra still keeps the records for the most rainfall in a calendar month and in a year. Elephant Falls comes en route, and Cherrapunjee delivers the rest: Mawsmai Cave, the plunging Nohkalikai Falls, the Seven Sister Falls and Eco Park, before the evening drive back.

Overnight in Shillong. Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner.

Day05

After breakfast, a scenic two-hour drive reaches Mawlynnong on the Indo-Bangla border, the tiny village that earned the title of cleanest in Asia, its lanes lined with flowering plants and swept daily by every villager in turn. After lunch, the road drops to Dawki for the Umngot river and local sightseeing, where the water runs famously clear over the stones. Evening return to Shillong.

Overnight in Shillong. Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner.

Day06

Transfer from Shillong to Guwahati Airport for the return flight to Cochin, and the tour ends with sweet memories.

Tour ends. Meals: breakfast, subject to the flight timings.
