Day by Day
Kochi to Phnom Penh, the temples of Angkor, Hanoi and Ninh Binh, and a night on Halong Bay.

The group assembles at Cochin International Airport, meets the Fortune tour manager, and completes check-in and emigration. Board the overnight flight to Singapore.
Land in Singapore and connect to the flight for Phnom Penh. After immigration, our local representative welcomes the group. The capital keeps its Khmer and colonial charm, with French villas along tree-lined roads. The day begins with the Choeung Ek memorial, seventeen kilometres out, where a quiet stupa honours the many who died under the Pol Pot regime. Back in the city for lunch and hotel check-in, then Wat Phnom, the city's most important temple, set on a man-made hill twenty-seven metres high and named for the widow who built the first pagoda here. The day ends at the busy Russian Market.
Overnight in Phnom Penh. Meals: lunch, dinner.
A six-hour road journey to Siem Reap, the gateway to the ruins of Angkor, seat of the Khmer kingdom from the 9th to the 15th centuries. The road passes villages, rice fields and wooden Khmer houses, with a short stop at Skuon town, famous for its fried spider snack, and another at Kampong Kdei to see the Naga Bridge, an ancient stone bridge of the Angkor period. On arrival, a wooden boat ride through the Chong Kneas Floating Village on the Tonle Sap, the Great Lake of Cambodia, where daily Khmer life plays out on the water. Lunch on the way and dinner at an Indian restaurant.
Overnight in Siem Reap. Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner.
The morning opens at the South Gate of Angkor Thom, the walled and moated royal city that was the last capital of the Angkorian Empire. Inside stand the Bayon Temple with its giant carved faces, the Terrace of the Elephants running three hundred metres through the heart of the city, the temple mountain of Baphuon, the Royal Palace Area with the Phimeanakas pyramid, and the Terrace of the Leper King, covered in carved nagas and demons. The afternoon belongs to Angkor Wat, built as a copy of the universe with Mount Meru at its centre, its five towers, long galleries and Apsara carvings telling the Khmer epics. In the evening, fly from Siem Reap to Hanoi, where the local guide meets the group.
Overnight in Hanoi. Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner.
A ninety-kilometre drive south to Ninh Binh, the capital of ancient Vietnam before Hanoi took the role in the 11th century. A boat trip at Tam Coc glides between limestone hills rising straight out of green paddy fields, the view that earns the name Halong Bay on land. On the way back, stop at Hoa Lu, the ground of the kings' palace in the 10th century, with the old Dinh and Le temples and their wooden carvings.
Overnight in Hanoi. Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner.
Check out at 8 am for the three-hour drive east through the Red River delta, past paddy fields, farmers and ploughing buffaloes. Halong Bay, the descending dragon bay of the Gulf of Tonkin, is a UNESCO World Heritage site of thousands of odd-shaped limestone rocks and karst grottoes. Board the overnight cruise and have lunch on the water, then visit the grottos, stop for swimming or kayaking, and pass floating houses up close. Back on board, a cooking demonstration before dinner, then evening activities or rest as you like.
Overnight on the cruise. Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner.
Wake early for dawn over the islets, when the sea the Vietnamese call the Eastern Sea turns gold. The boat cruises past rocks named for their shapes — Sail Island, Fisherman's Head, Butterfly Rock, Turtle Islet — with brunch on board as it returns to the pier. Drive back to Hanoi for a short visit to Ba Dinh Square, the biggest square in the city, photos at the Complex of Ho Chi Minh, then the Old Quarter, the maze of the 36 Streets where each street is named for what it once sold, from fabrics to medicines. A stop at Hoan Kiem Lake closes the day.
Overnight in Hanoi. Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner.
Check out and transfer to the airport for the flight home via Singapore, with delightful memories of Fortune Tours' Vietnam Cambodia tour.
Meals: breakfast.
