Take the Georgian Military Highway north to Gudauri, a mountain resort on the south-facing plateau of the Greater Caucasus, 120 km from Tbilisi and 2,200 metres up, famous for its winter ski slopes. Stops include the Zhinvali Reservoir, which supplies drinking water to nearly half of Tbilisi, and the Ananuri Fortress Complex on the Aragvi River, seat of the Dukes of Aragvi from the 13th century, with its Church of the Mother of God built in 1689. After lunch, the Gudauri Panorama, a round stone-and-concrete monument built in 1983 to mark Soviet Georgia–Russia friendship, its tile mural facing out over the Devil's Valley.
Overnight in Gudauri. Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner.
Drive to Gori, birthplace of Joseph Stalin, for the Stalin Museum and his childhood home — dedicated in 1957 in a Stalinist Gothic palazzo, its six halls of furniture, personal effects, gifts, documents and photographs closing with one of the twelve copies of his death mask. Continue to Mtskheta, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Georgia's oldest cities, capital of the Kingdom of Iberia: the Jvari Monastery above the meeting of the Mtkvari and Aragvi rivers, and Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, founded in the 4th century and the burial place of Georgian kings.
Overnight in Tbilisi. Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner.
Drive to the Chronicles of Georgia, then a walking tour of the old city from Europe Square: the wave-shaped glass Bridge of Peace, the clifftop Metekhi Church raised by King Demetrius II in the 13th century, with the statue of Vakhtang Gorgasali, founder of Tbilisi. A cable car lifts you to the Narikala fortress and the Mother of Kartli, and the walk descends to Abanotubani, the oldest quarter, known for the sulphur baths — most 18th-century, led by the tiled Orbeliani. Also the Holy Trinity Cathedral, one of the largest Orthodox cathedrals in the world, with time in the Old Town lanes of cobbles, wooden balconies and wine shops. On this departure, the day falls on Christmas.
Overnight in Tbilisi. Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner.
Check out from the hotel. Free time for leisure and shopping, and after lunch, transfer to Tbilisi International Airport for the flight home, with sweet memories of your Fortune Tours Georgia tour.
