Itinerary

Day by Day

Istanbul, Cappadocia and Konya, Pamukkale's terraces, Ephesus and Izmir, Bursa, and back to Istanbul for the Bosphorus and the bazaars.

Day01
The flight from Addis Ababa to Mumbai

The group assembles at Cochin International Airport and flies to Istanbul, the city that straddles Europe and Asia across the Bosphorus. On arrival, transfer to the hotel and settle in over a Turkish dinner.

Overnight in Istanbul. Meals: breakfast and lunch in flight, dinner.

Day02

A morning flight to Kayseri opens the door to Cappadocia, the land of fairy chimneys. After lunch, climb Uchisar Castle, the rock citadel with views over the whole region, walk the Goreme Open Air Museum, a UNESCO World Heritage complex of rock-cut churches and dwellings, and pass Devrent Valley's animal-shaped rocks, the famous camel among them.

Overnight in Cappadocia. Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner.

Day03

Before dawn, those who choose it can float over the fairy chimneys on the optional hot air balloon ride, rising up to a thousand feet for sunrise, with a celebration toast and flight certificate on landing, weather permitting. After breakfast, descend into Kaymakli Underground City, the rock-carved refuge of early Christians, and walk among the chimneys. After lunch, drive to Konya.

Overnight in Konya. Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner.

Day04

From Konya, home of the Mevlana Museum, the road runs to Pamukkale by afternoon. Explore Hierapolis, the ancient spa city on the hot springs — its necropolis, Roman baths, Frontinus Street, theatre, Apollon Temple and the Tomb of Philip the Apostle — then step onto the white travertines themselves, wading the warm thermal pools down the terraces.

Overnight in Pamukkale. Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner.

Day05

A full day in one of the ancient world's great harbour cities, named among the seven churches in the Book of Revelation. Through Selcuk to the Library of Celsus, the Temple of Hadrian on Curetes Street, the fountains, agora, Odeon and Grand Theatre, then Meryemana, the Virgin Mary's House, held to be her last home, and the site of the Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

Overnight in Izmir. Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner.

Day06

Drive to Bursa, first capital of the Ottoman Empire, for its streets, market and Ottoman monuments, then continue to Istanbul for the evening's showpiece: the Bosphorus Dinner Cruise, sailing the strait where Europe and Asia meet, with dinner, belly dance and music aboard.

Overnight in Istanbul. Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner.

Day07

The imperial city in one day: Topkapi Palace, seat of the Ottoman sultans, Hagia Sophia with its soaring sixth-century dome, the Blue Mosque of Sultan Ahmed with its cascade of domes, and the Hippodrome at Sultanahmet Square, chariot ground of Byzantine Constantinople. A Turkish lunch and an orientation tour round the day.

Overnight in Istanbul. Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner.

Day08

A morning for the Grand Bazaar, one of the world's largest and oldest covered markets — 61 streets and over 4,000 shops under painted vaults — then the Spice Bazaar's fragrant lanes. In the evening, transfer to Istanbul airport for the return journey.

Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner.

Day09

Arrive at Cochin International Airport with sweet memories of the Fortune Tours Turkey tour.

Tour ends.
