Day by Day
Into Hanoi and the Old Quarter, the boat trip through Ninh Binh, a full night aboard the Halong cruise, and Hanoi end to end before home.
The group assembles at Cochin International Airport, meets the Fortune tour manager, and completes check-in and emigration formalities before boarding the flight towards Singapore or Kuala Lumpur.
In transit.
The connecting flight lands at Hanoi's Noi Bai International Airport, where the local representative welcomes the group to Vietnam. Check in to the hotel after lunch, and in the late afternoon step into the capital's oldest heart: a walk through the night market and the 36 ancient streets of the Old Quarter, a loop of Hoan Kiem Lake, and the crossing of the red-painted Huc Bridge to Ngoc Son Temple on its small island. The evening closes with the famous Water Puppet Show, the old Red River Delta art where wooden puppets dance on a stage of water to live traditional music.
Overnight in Hanoi. Meals: lunch, dinner.
After breakfast, a scenic 90-kilometre drive runs south to Ninh Binh, the seat of ancient Vietnam before Hanoi rose in the 11th century. The day opens with the peaceful boat trip through Tam Coc, where limestone towers climb straight out of green rice fields — a landscape so like the famous bay that locals call it Halong Bay on land. The afternoon visits Hoa Lu, the ancient royal capital, with the carved wooden halls of the Dinh and Le temples honouring the kings of the 10th century. Return to Hanoi by late afternoon.
Overnight in Hanoi. Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner.
Check out after breakfast and head three hours east through the paddies and villages of the Red River delta to Halong Bay, the pride of the Gulf of Tonkin, listed as a UNESCO Natural World Heritage site in 1994 and again in 2000. Check in to the overnight cruise and set out among thousands of odd-shaped limestone rocks and karst grottoes of this descending dragon bay. After lunch on board come the grottos, a stop for swimming or kayaking, and slow passes by floating houses and close islets, then a cooking demonstration before dinner and evening activities on deck.
Overnight in the cruise cabin. Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner.
Wake early for sunrise over the East Sea as light spreads across the scattered islets. After breakfast, the cruise threads the bay's most spectacular corners, past formations named for their shapes — Sail Island, Fisherman's Head Rock, Butterfly Rock and Turtle Islet — before a relaxed brunch on board as the boat returns to the pier. Back in Hanoi, the city tour begins: Ba Dinh Square, the largest in the city and the stage of its great national events, photographs at the Ho Chi Minh Complex, and then Hanoi Train Street, where the tracks squeeze between homes and cafes close enough to touch.
Overnight in Hanoi. Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner.
After breakfast, check out and transfer to the airport for the connecting flights home, carrying sweet memories of the Fortune Tours Vietnam tour.
Tour ends. Meals: breakfast.
