Azerbaijan Tour Package From Kochi, 5 Days

Why this journey

A Short Trip That Feels Much Bigger.

A Short Trip That Feels Much Bigger.

Azerbaijan sits where Asia meets Europe, held between the Caspian Sea and the Caucasus mountains. It is close enough for a short holiday and different enough to feel like a proper journey. Baku gives you a glass and stone skyline on one side and a walled medieval city on the other. An hour out of town, the ground itself is the attraction, with rock carvings thousands of years old, cold mud volcanoes you can walk right up to, and a hillside that has been on fire for as long as anyone can remember. Then the road turns north into green mountain country at Gabala. Five days, one flight from Kochi, and a Malayalee tour manager with the group throughout.

The land of fire

Where the Ground Burns on Its Own.

Ateshgah and Yanar Dag

Two Fires, One Afternoon

Azerbaijan is called the land of fire for a reason you can stand in front of. Ateshgah, the Fire Temple of Baku, is a castle shaped complex built around a central flame. The site was a Zoroastrian place of worship, and the walls you see today were raised in the eighteenth century by Indian Shiva devotees, with Persian and Indian inscriptions still on the stone. Many Kerala travellers find this the most unexpected stop of the trip. A short drive on, Yanar Dag is a natural gas fire on a hillside of the Absheron Peninsula. Flames rise about three metres straight out of a thin layer of porous sandstone, and they do not go out. Marco Polo wrote about flames like these in the thirteenth century. Yanar Dag is the one still burning.

Rock Carvings and Mud Volcanoes.
Older than almost everything

Rock Carvings and Mud Volcanoes.

The Gobustan State Reserve is a UNESCO World Heritage site about 64 kilometres southwest of central Baku, protected since 1966. More than 6,000 carvings are cut into the rock here, showing people, animals, dancers, boats with rowers, warriors, camel trains, and the sun and stars. The oldest are thought to go back tens of thousands of years. The mud volcanoes come next, and the transfer to them is part of the fun. The group changes into old Soviet Lada cars for the last stretch, because the track is rough. What waits at the top is a field of small grey cones that bubble and burp cold mud. Azerbaijan has a large share of the world's mud volcanoes, and local people have their own names for them, including yanardagh for burning mountain and gaynacha for boiling water. Wear shoes you do not mind getting dirty.

Questions with useful answers

Five days ex Kochi with four nights, three in Baku and one in Gabala. The plan covers the Baku city sights, a full day at Gobustan and Absheron with the mud volcanoes, the Ateshgah Fire Temple and Yanar Dag, the drive to Gabala with the cable car ride and Nohur Lake, the Car Museum at the Heydar Aliyev Center, Nizami Street, and the walled Old City on the last morning. The complete day by day plan sits on the itinerary page.

Yes. Fortune runs a separate December departure on the same route, with the same three Baku nights and one Gabala night. The date on that tour is fixed and seats are limited, so it is worth calling the desk early. The full plan sits on the Christmas in Baku itinerary page.

No. Most days are drives with short walks at each stop. The two spots that need a little effort are the rock carving trail at Gobustan and the lanes of the Old City, both of which are paved and taken at an easy pace. Comfortable walking shoes matter more than fitness on this trip.

Breakfast is a continental buffet at the hotel. Lunch and dinner are at local and Indian restaurants through the tour, including an Indian dinner on the Gabala night, so vegetarian travellers from Kerala eat comfortably.

Azerbaijan is a foreign country, so travel documents are needed and your passport must be valid and undamaged. The desk confirms the current visa position and what it involves at the time of booking, so ask before you pay.

Yes, travel insurance for travellers up to 70 years is inside the tour cost, along with airport taxes and entry tickets. Travellers above 70 should speak to the desk when booking so cover can be sorted separately.

Yes, on the regular departure. Extra nights in Baku, a second mountain night, a gentler start after the flight, or a private departure for your own group can all be worked into the plan. The December departure runs on a fixed date, though extra nights either side of it can still be arranged. Tell the desk what you want and a revised plan comes back for approval.
