Chardham Yatra: The Four Abodes of the Himalaya

Bathe where the Ganga is born, trek to Shiva's temple among the snow peaks, and take darshan at Badrinath, where a Kerala thread has run through the priesthood for centuries. Fortune's 14-day Chardham yatra flies ex Kochi and walks the whole sacred circle with you, flights, entry tickets, and veg meals inside the price.

Why this yatra

The Four Abodes, Done the Full Way.

The Four Abodes, Done the Full Way.

The Char Dham of the Himalaya, Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath, form the most sacred circuit in the mountains, the yatra generations save for and remember forever. Tradition ties it to Kerala more deeply than most yatris know: Adi Shankaracharya of Kaladi is honoured as the reviver of these shrines, and by centuries-old custom Badrinath's chief priest, the Rawal, comes from Kerala's Namboodiri line. Fortune's route does the circle honestly and completely, opening at Haridwar's Ganga Aarti, taking both treks at a pilgrim's pace, threading all five Prayags on the way down, and closing with a full Delhi day before the flight home.

The four dhams

The Circle, Shrine by Shrine.

The yatra's heart, in the order the road reaches them.

  • Yamunotri

    Yamunotri

    The seat of the Yamuna

Reached by a 6 kilometre trek from Janki Chatti, with the hot Surya Kund where pilgrims cook rice prasad in the spring itself, and pooja at the Divya Shila.

  • Gangotri

    Gangotri

The origin shrine of the Ganga

With a holy dip in the Bhagirathi at its birth, the Gangnani hot spring kund en route, and the beautiful Harsil valley for company.

  • Kedarnath

    Kedarnath

Shiva's high abode among the snow peaks

Earned by the 21-kilometre trek and answered with a night at the dham itself, so darshan comes with the mountain dawn.

  • Badrinath

    Badrinath

    The abode of Vishnu

Where pilgrims bathe in the Taptkund before darshan of Badrivishal, with Mana village, Ganesh Guffa, and Vyas Guffa beyond the temple.

The climb that counts

The Trek That Ends at Shiva's Door.

Twenty One Kilometres, Then the Bells
Kedarnath

Twenty One Kilometres, Then the Bells

Kedarnath does not come easy, and that is the point. From the roadhead, the trail climbs 21 kilometres into the high Himalaya, on foot for those who can, by pony or doli at their own cost for those who prefer, until the stone temple appears against the snow. Then the yatra's greatest privilege: the night is spent at Kedarnath itself, on sharing or dormitory basis, plainly said, so that darshan and pooja come in the mountain's own morning, before the day crowds climb. Ask any returned yatri which memory outlasts the rest. It is this one.

Worth the first evening

The Evening the River Catches Fire.

Before a single mountain is climbed, the yatra opens with Haridwar's Ganga Aarti at Har Ki Pauri. As dusk settles, the ghats fill shoulder to shoulder, the great lamps swing in circles of flame, the chant rolls over the water, and thousands of small diyas drift downstream carrying prayers. It costs no trek and no climb, and it sets the heart right for everything the next twelve days will ask. The day also covers Manasa Devi, Chandi Devi, and the Bharat Mata temple, so Haridwar arrives whole.

What the Mountain Asks First.
The Fine Print, Made Simple

What the Mountain Asks First.

This is a domestic yatra, so no passport is needed, only a valid government photo ID for the flights. Now the honest part, said before booking rather than after. Two days are trek days, 6 kilometres to Yamunotri and 21 kilometres each way at Kedarnath, with pony or doli available at your own cost on both. The Kedarnath night runs on sharing or dormitory basis at the dham. The longest road day covers about 230 kilometres over nine hours, and early days start with packed breakfasts. The high dhams sit above three thousand metres, so anyone with heart or breathing conditions should see a doctor first, and travel insurance is not included but worth arranging. Routes and darshans bend to the weather, and the mountain keeps the final say.

FAQ

Questions with useful answers

Fourteen days ex Kochi around the full circle: Haridwar and the Ganga Aarti, Rishikesh, the Yamunotri trek, Uttarkashi and Gangotri, the Kedarnath trek with a night at the dham, Badrinath with Mana village, the five Prayags on the descent, and a closing Delhi day. The complete day-wise plan sits on the itinerary page.

No. It is a fully domestic journey, so a valid government photo ID for each traveller covers the flights.

Real but walkable for the reasonably fit: 6 kilometres to Yamunotri and 21 kilometres each way at Kedarnath, taken at a pilgrim's pace. Ponies and dolis run on both routes at own cost, and helicopter options for the trek legs can be quoted by the desk on request. Travellers with heart or breathing conditions consult a doctor first.

At the dham itself, on a sharing or dormitory basis, exactly as the plan states. Simple beds, sacred ground, and darshan in the mountain's own morning, which yatris count as the trade of a lifetime.

Only in the temple season, when the high shrines open between spring and the Diwali closing. This season carries one set of departures, and the desk shares the date and seat position the moment you enquire.

Yes. Private departures for family or satsang groups, added rest nights, and separately quoted helicopter legs all sit within reach. Tell the desk what your group needs, and the reworked plan comes back priced for approval.
